The way that organisations recruit, retain, engage with and develop quality people may be an enabler or inhibitor to superior performance.
Prior to coming to New Zealand, Liz taught on a number of undergraduate and post graduate management courses in Ireland. In addition, she worked as an Investor In People (IIPUK) specialist on a Management Analysis Programme. This programme was a government funded initiative designed to specifically help SMEs, in all industry sectors, develop leadership and management skills that would help them successfully compete at all levels.
Working in operational HRM in the private sector for many years provided excellent opportunities to develop an understanding of the challenges facing competitive industries. There were many opportunities to design, implement and evaluate strategic people and outputs focussed human resource management (HRM) policy and practice. In addition to teaching responsibilities at the University of Otago, current work projects include designing and delivering people management workshops and working on strategic development initiatives with IIP (NZ). Liz was also Business Consultant to LG Individual and Sales Support Manager with Zurich Financial Services
Working on the MBA programme provides an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the people management policy and practices introduced by international organisations. Understanding what drives people to perform at their best is a universal challenge, therefore, sharing knowledge and ideas with experienced international students is an excellent learning opportunity for everyone on the course.
Liz’s course is particularly important to business professionals who recognise and value the part people play in overall operational excellence. Students will be encouraged to research and analyse contemporary HRM theory, critically evaluate current practice and make recommendations designed to help organisations compete in dynamic business environments. The organisation of the future is being shaped today by many factors, including the way that people management practice is designed, implemented and evaluated.
Whilst course content is not intended to be prescriptive, many of the principles can be adapted and applied worldwide in a way that meets the needs of the organization and employees. The acceleration of global competition and demographic change has created operational challenges and provided exciting opportunities for a more pro-active, strategic, culturally aware, people and business focused management approach.
